Biko Zulu, a seasoned writer, has inspired this article. His article was on lessons he has gathered through his twenties.
I now have nearly two decades of existence and thought why not? I have seen quite a lot so far or maybe just enough to have an opinion about life, even if it is flimsy. These things are strictly from my own experience; So let’s dive in:
You will be grateful that you were born into a generation of people who are vocal about their needs. They do not bow down and show subservience to oppressive systems, they speak out and do not give a damn about the consequences that may follow.
You will realize how much Chat GPT means to you. Life before Chat GPT even seems very blurred. How did people live without AI anyway?
Americanah by Chimamanda still has your heart. Oh, the unforgettable scene of Princeton having no smell. You will experience this. Nassau Street and its overpriced thrift shops! You’ll always think about the love of Ifemelu and Obinze.
Every once in a while, you will reread Atomic Habits and want to overhaul your life. Cut off all your bad habits, build healthy ones, and build that life that you need then the adrenaline will die down and you will just fall back to your normal patterns. Hey, this does not mean you are content with the toxic habits that you have. Consistency, you are… working on it.
Linkedin? Not such a pleasant place, because why are people taking life seriously? Can we just chill out a bit? I am taking it seriously too, unfortunately.
You will learn that all these men, whether 50 or 20 years old, are just big toddlers. They claim that they are rational thinkers but all they do is throw tantrums. Rationality in relationships? Quite lacking. Some are quite daft. It is wanting.
In college, you will talk about birth control and consent. It will be sad because these are not things that are comfortably talked about in your household. You will understand that anyone being celibate does not mean that they are a saint.
You will discover and uncover some horrors in people’s lives. Yes, no one’s perfect but some are testing the limits. Side eye.
You will outgrow friends but form new ones too. Replacement, that’s the order of life. Guilt will gnaw at you but friendships, are a two-way street. They should want you just as much as you do. So, you will stop fighting in spaces where your fight is worth nothing.
You will discover that these days people believe in anything and everything. The search for spiritual fulfillment is more aggressive than ever. So people will read and channel things but the truth is all you need is Jesus. You will realize how much you were guarded in high school. The grace for growth there was in abundance. It’s time to put in the work!
Oh! How life moves on with you!
You’ll find out that people will never stop making fun of how skinny you are. Some are mere jokes, others are fishing for a reaction. They’ll use that as a conversation starter. Men will say it and add that they like petite girls as if that is meant to comfort you for being chosen. Deep down you couldn’t care less.
Why do breakups always cast the other person as the villain? Let’s be mature here. Exits are fine, let’s just be civil, break bread, and move on if it’s not working for either of us.
Life gets better any way you have had your share of hardships maybe it’s about time!
